Welcome to Year 1. We’re looking forward to a whole year of fun, hard work and brilliant learning.

You may have noticed that our Creative Curriculum topic web is now online in the Creative Curriculum tab to the left of this page; it will tell you all the kinds of skills we plan to cover during this unit of work.

Our Creative Curriculum topics concentrate predominantly on history or geography skills along with art, design and technology, music, ICT and more besides. There is also a strong emphasis on linking in Literacy and Numeracy skills at every opportunity and, where possible, Science, too.

As it isn’t possible to cover everything through our Creative Curriculum, children also have separate Literacy and Numeracy lessons which follow the National Strategies.

In Year 1, some of our Literacy Units are*:

  • Stories with Familiar Settings

  • Stories from Other Cultures

  • Traditional Tales

  • Stories about Fantasy Worlds

  • Labels, Lists and Captions

  • Instructional Writing

  • Recounts

  • Information Texts

  • Poetry

In Numeracy, some of the Year 1 topics are*:

  • Learning number facts such as number bonds to 10 (and some beyond).

  • Adding one digit numbers to lots of other numbers.

  • Taking away a one digit number from a bigger number.

  • Counting in groups.

  • Introducing tens and units.

  • 2D and 3D shape work.

  • Telling the time to the half hour.

  • Comparing length, mass and capacity and measuring in non-standard units (e.g. 3 cups full).

  • Learning coin names and using money.

Many parents ask us for the best way to help their child. First and foremost, taking an interest in homework is an excellent way to gain an insight into the way your child is working at school. You will get a feel for the methods we use and the topics we’re covering at a particular time. You can also check the Children's Area for any useful games on the homework page. If your child is struggling with anything, we will always let you know and make suggestions as to how to help them.

Have fun!
