Sportshall Athletics 2023
This year saw the children from Years 5 & 6 compete in a regular athletics festival at Streetly Academy. The team of 10 girls and 8 boys, took on 5 other schools at their heat. Knocking aside the competition with ease, the team sprinted to finish their track and field events with a big gap between them and the competition.
The Walsall finals are usually the second stage of the competition, however with one of the colleges not putting forward any primary schools to take part, the heat winners from Streetly all qualified for the Black Country Games 2023.
The Black Country Games (BCG) is an annual festival of children's sport including secondary and primary competitors across a range of sports from four areas of the Black Country, Walsall, Dudley, Wolverhampton and Sandwell. Over 200 primary schools competed to qualify for the finals, making us in the top 12 across the area. This year, the sportshall event was strangely held before the main BCG activities. The atmosphere at Aldersley Stadium was still electric from the 12 teams competing.
Unfortunately, success was not on the agenda this year, with slips on the surface; dropped batons; and ankle injuries on the track events, we finished down the rankings this year, though still a very good series of field event results. With half of the squad being Year 5s, plenty of experience towards next year's competition.
A fantastic effort to get this far.
